Listen to the future landlords utility estimates

Posted by Casandra 907 days ago

I'm about to get an apartment with this complex and I asked the landlord how much my electricity bill would be. She seemed to ponder for a moment, then throw out a figure that seemed a little low ($60).

The apartment is a pretty big place. I talked to a few people and asked them what they thought about the estimate, they all seem to agree that it's low.

Who should I listen to?

Be cautious.

Landlords not only manage the daily functioning of residential buildings, but also sell to you and others their future rental. They’ll inform you of the multiple advantages as to why you should live at that apartment or house and not any other. They lose money for every apartment or house they have a vacancy for each month, meaning you signing a lease agreeing to live there puts money in their pocket.

With that said, you need to be cautious with promises made by your landlord verbally, particularly when it comes to the costs of utilities. Whether you ask roughly how much electricity and water will cost, or they offer their prices to you first, the actual cost will always be higher than what your landlord says. I won’t go as far as to say that landlords throw out random numbers, but I will say that they’re usually grossly under calculated.

Listen to Douglas. The world is a business, don't trust anything told to you that isn't in writing.
